The story

José Mourinho has backed Kylian Mbappé and Real Madrid’s response to controversy over the forward’s comments about a meme comparing him with Mao Zedong. Speaking before Madrid’s trip to Racing de Santander, Mourinho urged care with public remarks while supporting the way his player and club had addressed the reaction.

The discussion arrived in a week already dominated by major football headlines around Mbappé. Madrid had won El Clásico, and the striker had finished second to Harry Kane in the Ballon d’Or voting. A dispute about comments away from the pitch then added another subject to the manager’s pre-match press conference.

Madrid’s response becomes the focus

The Associated Press reported that Real Madrid issued an apology to the Chinese public on 28 October. By the time Mourinho spoke on 31 October, the club’s reaction formed an important part of the story alongside the original remarks.

EFE’s account of the press conference describes Mourinho’s warning about the risks of speaking in the modern media environment. His point was about the speed and reach of a public comment: an observation made in one setting can become an international issue before the next match arrives.

Mourinho also expressed support for the immediate response from Mbappé and Madrid. That allowed him to acknowledge the controversy without turning the press conference into a criticism of the player’s character.

Football remains on the agenda

Madrid’s official preview placed the press conference ahead of the league meeting with Racing de Santander at El Sardinero. The manager therefore had the practical work of preparing another match while answering questions about a subject that had travelled well beyond football.

That is the difficult balance in a week like this. A club must respond when its player’s comments cause offence, while the team still needs to prepare for its next opponent. Addressing the issue clearly can help keep the sporting and public responsibilities from becoming confused.

A closely watched week for Mbappé

Mbappé’s narrow Ballon d’Or defeat also appeared in coverage of Mourinho’s remarks. The coach praised the forward’s maturity and his respect towards Kane after the result, according to Cadena SER’s account.

The award and the controversy are separate matters, but together they explain why Mbappé was attracting so much attention. One concerned a close sporting vote; the other concerned the impact of words outside a match. Mourinho’s response attempted to close the second discussion responsibly while keeping the team’s next performance in view.

For Madrid, the next football test was clear. For Mbappé, the wider lesson of the week was equally visible: a leading player’s audience extends far beyond the supporters watching his goals.
