The story

The Atlanta Dream kept their championship hopes alive with an 80–69 victory over the Golden State Valkyries, forcing the WNBA Finals into a seventh game. Allisha Gray scored 23 points and Rhyne Howard added 21 as Atlanta answered the pressure of elimination at State Farm Arena.

Golden State entered Game 6 leading the series 3–2. Atlanta’s win removed that advantage and left the title to be settled in one final contest. The Dream had no room for another defeat; their response was an eleven-point victory against a team that had been one win from the championship.

Gray and Howard lead the scoring

The WNBA’s official game account identified Gray and Howard as Atlanta’s leading scorers. Their combined 44 points represented more than half of the Dream’s total, giving the home side a dependable scoring foundation in a game it had to win.

Golden State made a late push, but Atlanta held on. That final resistance matters as much as the early shooting: an elimination game is not secured until the opponent’s last recovery has been contained. The Dream finished with enough separation to send the series to a decider.

For the Valkyries, the result meant a missed opportunity to close out the Finals. For Atlanta, it changed the feeling of the series from survival to a direct chance at the trophy.

An unusual setting for a decisive afternoon

Game 6 was played at State Farm Arena on 29 October with a 12:30 p.m. local start. The league announced the venue and lunchtime tip-off earlier in the week. Atlanta’s own report described a sold-out arena for a team pursuing its first WNBA title.

That gave the game a distinctive backdrop. Supporters gathered for an early start with the season at stake, rather than the more familiar evening championship slot. The stakes remained the same: win and extend the Finals, or watch the opponent finish the series.

Atlanta delivered the result its home crowd needed. The scoreline gives the simplest account of that afternoon, but the series position explains its emotional weight. Every successful possession helped keep a championship opportunity alive.

Everything moves to Game 7

At three wins apiece, neither team retained a cushion. The advantage Golden State had earned by moving ahead in the series was gone; Atlanta’s comeback had created a single remaining test for both sides.

The Dream could take confidence from their leading scorers and from the ability to withstand Golden State’s late rally. The Valkyries still had the opportunity to respond in the deciding game, making the next meeting a fresh contest rather than a continuation of an aggregate score.

Game 6 settled one question emphatically: Atlanta were not ready for their season to end. Gray and Howard supplied the points, the Dream protected the result, and the Finals were extended to the most direct championship scenario basketball offers.
