The story

James Maddison was made available for Tottenham’s Premier League meeting with Crystal Palace after Roberto De Zerbi gave a positive update on the playmaker’s fitness. The news eased concern following his early second-half departure in the previous weekend’s 2–0 win at Chelsea.

Maddison had not completed the same training programme as the rest of the squad during the week. De Zerbi nevertheless confirmed before the Palace game that he could be selected, giving Tottenham another attacking option for the home fixture.

A concern after Stamford Bridge

The Chelsea match had shown Maddison’s importance before it created a new fitness question. Tottenham’s official update described him as influential during the first half, with his withdrawal coming early in the second.

That combination made the follow-up significant. Losing a player who has just helped shape a strong performance can interrupt a team’s rhythm; making him available again preserves a familiar option for the next match.

De Zerbi’s announcement concerned availability rather than a guaranteed starting place. That distinction leaves the manager room to decide how best to use a player who had a different training week, including whether to start him or introduce him later.

What Maddison offers

In the club’s published press-conference account, De Zerbi highlighted Maddison’s distinctive qualities, experience and personality. He also discussed the alternatives available for the number-ten role, including players with different strengths rather than identical replacements.

That variety matters when a manager selects an attacking shape. A playmaker who receives between midfield and defence changes the way team-mates can make runs and combine around the penalty area. Another player in the same position may offer more carrying, pressing or movement beyond the striker.

For Tottenham, Maddison’s return to the selection picture therefore adds both an individual and a tactical choice. It allows De Zerbi to consider the kind of attacking connections he wants, rather than simply filling a vacancy.

Managing the return

De Zerbi also pointed to the sustained work Maddison had completed over the preceding weeks. The manager’s assessment was that the disruption to a couple of training days did not remove the fitness base already established.

The next step was to translate that assessment into match involvement against Palace. A positive pre-match update does not require a player to complete every minute; it gives the coaching staff the option to use him in the role and workload that best fit the game.

For supporters, the encouraging development was straightforward. A player whose withdrawal had raised concern was back among the available choices, and Tottenham could prepare with more creativity in their attacking options.
