The story

Harriet Dart reached her first WTA singles final by turning a difficult Guangzhou semi-final into a three-set victory over Sun Xinran. The British qualifier won 5–7, 7–6(1), 6–0, surviving the closest stage of the match before taking complete control of the deciding set.

For Dart, the result is a career milestone as well as another comeback. She arrived in the main draw through qualifying and worked her way to the final against a home player who had the first set in hand. By the finish, the momentum had moved decisively in the opposite direction.

A match decided in two different ways

The first two sets were separated by the narrowest margins. Sun took the opener 7–5, leaving Dart needing to win the second to remain in the tournament. That set went to a tie-break, where the British player produced the clearest sustained advantage of the contest so far, taking it 7–1.

Once Dart had levelled the match, the third set became a very different encounter. She won all six games to complete the victory. The scoreline captures the change: two closely contested sets followed by a deciding set in which Sun could not stop her opponent’s progress.

Recovering in that order is demanding. A player who drops a tight opening set must keep creating chances without becoming impatient; reaching a tie-break then concentrates the pressure into a handful of points. Dart came through both stages before finding the freedom to finish strongly.

A breakthrough built across the week

The semi-final was not Dart’s first recovery in Guangzhou. In the quarter-final she had beaten Paula Badosa 3–6, 6–2, 6–4. That result secured her place in the last four and gave her another recent example of working through a match after losing the opening set.

The LTA confirmed the significance of the semi-final win: a first appearance in a WTA singles final. Her run therefore extends beyond one good afternoon. Qualification, main-draw progress and two comeback victories have combined to produce a new high point on the tour.

The final test

Dart’s scheduled final opponent was Lilli Tagger, who reached the title match by beating Kaitlin Quevedo 6–2, 6–0. Their semi-finals offered contrasting routes through the draw: Tagger advanced in straight sets, while Dart had to negotiate a lengthy three-set contest.

Recovery becomes part of the preparation after a match like Dart’s. The next task is to carry the confidence of the turnaround into a new contest without relying on another escape. A final offers a fresh scoreboard, but the experience of closing out a deciding set so decisively is something she can take with her.

Whatever follows in the title match, Guangzhou has already supplied a breakthrough. Dart has reached a stage she had not previously reached in WTA singles, and she did it by staying in a difficult match long enough to take charge of it.
