The story
Wayne Rooney has been named pundit of the year at the Broadcast Sport Awards, adding a broadcasting honour to his football achievements.
The award was presented at Thursday’s ceremony in London, attended by about 650 people from the industry, according to BBC Sport.
A different platform for Rooney
His television work has included World Cup coverage, with his direct style and humour becoming part of his appeal. The recognition comes after a managerial career that included Derby County, DC United, Birmingham City and Plymouth Argyle.
For the former Manchester United and England captain, broadcasting offers another way to explain the game and draw on his experience. The award recognises that work on screen; it is separate from any decision about whether he might return to coaching.
