Sheehan backs Ireland’s squad before Nations Championship tests

The story

Ireland captain Dan Sheehan has defended the quality of his squad as they prepare for home matches against Argentina, Fiji and South Africa.

BBC Sport reports that Sheehan rejected suggestions of a decline and urged the team to retain confidence in its players and coaching group. He is deputising for injured captain Caelan Doris.

Results will test that confidence

Ireland remain third in the world rankings, but heavy defeats by leading opponents have prompted questions about their progress. Coach Andy Farrell has said improvement is needed before realistic World Cup ambitions can be formed.

Sheehan’s response focuses on backing the personnel already in place and strengthening their work. The coming Nations Championship fixtures give Ireland a chance to show that response through performances.
