Stojsavljevic takes late opportunity for first WTA main-draw win
The story
Mika Stojsavljevic defeated Sofia Kenin in Hong Kong to claim her first WTA Tour main-draw victory.
The British teenager entered as a lucky loser after falling in qualifying. BBC Sport reports that she had only about an hour’s notice before taking the court and winning 6–3, 4–6, 6–4.
A breakthrough against a major champion
Kenin won the Australian Open in 2020 and was ranked well above the 17-year-old. Stojsavljevic nevertheless held her nerve in the deciding set to complete the upset.
The result adds a tour-level milestone to a year that already included a notable Billie Jean King Cup qualifying win. It also shows how a late main-draw vacancy can become a significant opportunity for a young player.
