Formula 1 remembers Williams’ first champion Alan Jones

The story

Alan Jones, the 1980 Formula 1 world champion, has died aged 80, his family has announced.

BBC Sport reports that a family statement released through Motorsport Australia said Jones died on November 5 after a short illness. He was the first driver to win a world championship for Williams.

A defining place in Williams history

Jones competed in Formula 1 from 1975 to 1986 and won twelve grands prix. His first victory came with Shadow in Austria in 1977, before he moved to Williams the following year.

Five victories helped secure his 1980 championship ahead of Nelson Piquet. He remained Australia’s most recent Formula 1 world champion and continued racing in other categories after his grand prix career.
