The story

A Brazilian under-20 match produced 53 red cards after a mass confrontation involving players, staff and club officials.

BBC Sport reports that the incident occurred during the first leg of the Minas Gerais semi-final between Uberlandia and Mamore at Parque do Sabia. The dismissals covered 43 players, eight staff members and two board members.

Disorder overshadows the football

Police became involved as the confrontation escalated. Reporting cited by the BBC also described damage at the stadium.

The scale of the disciplinary response made this an extraordinary interruption to a youth competition. The reported total should be understood as covering several categories of people, rather than 53 players. Any subsequent sanctions or decisions about the tie require separate confirmation from the relevant authorities.
