WTA staff support Burrage after online threats in Chennai
The story
Jodie Burrage is receiving support from WTA staff in Chennai after she was sent threatening messages on social media.
BBC Sport reports that the abuse followed Burrage’s singles defeat on Tuesday. She subsequently returned to court and won a doubles match alongside American Robin Montgomery.
Player welfare comes into focus
The WTA told the broadcaster that staff at the event were assisting Burrage, alongside its wider welfare and Threat Matrix teams. Other players also expressed solidarity after Burrage shared examples of the messages.
The incident highlights a continuing welfare issue for professional tennis. The WTA says its Threat Matrix service identifies and investigates threatening accounts. The abusive messages themselves are not reproduced here.
