Hijikata comeback ends Djokovic’s ATP Finals qualification hopes

The story

Novak Djokovic’s chance of qualifying for the ATP Finals ended with a three-set defeat by Rinky Hijikata at the Paris Masters.

The Australian qualifier recovered from losing the opening set to win 2–6, 6–3, 6–3. BBC Sport reports that Djokovic likely needed a semi-final appearance in Paris to reach the season-ending tournament in Turin.

The match turned after the opening set

Hijikata raised his level late in the second set and carried that momentum into the decider. Djokovic acknowledged his opponent’s performance and the loss of control after his strong start.

The result closes Djokovic’s season without another opportunity to compete for the ATP Finals title. The remaining qualification places will instead be settled among the other players still in contention.
